[Week 7] Warp Speed

This week I'm turning my direction to FTL speed for interplanetary travel. The plan is this:

  • Use object inspector to select a warp target (at least 1M km away)
  • When engaged, ship is animated to align
  • Ship is then accelerated to a high speed (~15kms)
  • A tear briefly opens in the sky for others watching at which the ship disappears
  • We animate a nice inverted sphere warp effect whereby the entire sky folds inward to a sphere then a bright ball of light
  • The above animation reverses as the users is dropped to normal space
  • The user's ship decelerates from ~15kms to 0 in a brief time span at their arrival point

^ And towing turned out solid, building space trains is fun! :)

Warp is nearly complete and looking really solid. I've wanted to build this first-person warp effect for some time now:

The crash landing is what I'm working on now, but it's starting to feel like a navigable solar system already.
